Study

Summary - 10 things students need to say to themselves

We all have been there. The life in which all you should do is actually study study study. It a strange new world where every problem seems to be the most critical problem on earth. And every seconds seem like torture but when you think about it, it was the best time of your life.

However in this life (student life), you will faced some of the most challenging task in life. Hopefully these words will help you cope with the situation.

Listed below are 10 of the most common situation faced by students. And of course its corresponding responses. Just say it out loud when you are stuck in that situation.

When you are feeling lazy to study

  • If I don’t study now, I will have to do it later. At least now.. I will have more time and can study with minimum concentration

When you are doing something else besides studying

  • This isn’t helping

When you fail an exam

  • Wow.. failure sucks. Now where exactly can I improve

When you succeed

  • I will definitely remember this feeling. Now where exactly did I do right?

When you are shy to ask questions in the classroom

  • Years from now, I most probably won’t meet these people again my entire life. What they think won’t matter then, and should not matter now.

When you have that butterfly in your stomach just before the exam

  • I’ve done what I can, and I shall fail or succeed entirely up to my preparation. Nothing else. So get off me you silly butterfly

When you are so busy with your study, it overwhelm you.

  • Stop right there.. Breathe. Let me do this one at a time. In the end, everything will be done.

When you have so much free time

  • This is not supposed to happen. Either I am extremely efficient or I’m missing 2 or 3 classes

When you think you just can’t study anymore.

  • I better rest. There is no such thing as information overload, it’s just that I’m tired. My brain is better than this.

When you have so many problems, you think your head is going to explode

  • Millions of galaxy, each with millions of stars, each possibly with a series of planet orbitting, and assuming one of the planet may have millions of people like earth, that will total up to almost infinite amount of people, each with their very own problem. How can my problem be any bigger than this.

/end list

- I wonder -
Any other situation I might miss?

——— Personal Note ———-
I think you would agree that distraction work at its most efficiency during studying time. Suddenly there’s your favorite songs playing in the radio, or friends coming to chat. I’m not sure why, maybe because deep down we always prefer to do other things besides studying.

During my time, my only distraction is Internet Relay Chat (IRC). I actually almost fail one of my subject due to this. Anyway I learnt my lesson the hard way :)

Summary - Sometimes, being skeptical is a must

Listed below are 7 situation where you must remember exactly how to respond.

1) When someone persuade you to invest money to gain more money

  • “How does the scheme make money in the first place?”

2) When someone give you freebie

  • “How will you benefit from this?”

3) When someone told you that you’re family

  • “How again are we exactly connected?”

4) When someone tell you he’s a police and demand to be allowed inside your house

  • “Which police station send you?” (And called the respective station to verify)

5) When someone says “I love you”

  • “What about me that you love?”

6) When a stranger ask you to hold on to his luggage while he’s going to the loo

  • “Anything illegal in there?”

7) When someone ask for your money to buy bus ticket?

  • “Where do you want to go? Let me buy the ticket for you.” (More about this experience here)

I know, all the replies do potray you as being very suspicious. But, I do believe, we are now living in a world where some people are making money from other’s honesty and kindness.

I was recently actually approached by a friend of mine to invest about USD50K (That’s RM150,000) and was promised a guaranteed income of 10% of investment every month until I die. Can you believe that? That’s like you received a total interest of 120% every year.

The first question I asked, is exactly like I mentioned above - “Where does the money come from?” and the answer given was very abstract and general, I’m not so sure he understood what he’s saying too. Thus I find it even harder to believe.

Conclusion - There’s nothing wrong with being suspicious / skeptical when it comes to strangers and money.

———- Personal Note ———-
There are some questions which you must know and give out the answer straight away. I remembered an episode of FRIENDS where Ross is teaching Chandler some tips on how to communicate with his girlfriend.

“When your girlfriend ask you is she fat? Don’t look up and down, just immediately say NO :)”

Balance

Summary - 100% may not be the best thing

  • To be the perfect husband
  • Achieving 100% in all test
  • Finishing up all works assigned

I’m sure we had all heard some version of those words.. The fact is we had been bombarded with ideas that the perfect way is the only best way. Being a semi-perfectionist (I know there’s no such thing), I am totally agree with this.

But

Life is all about compromise. We get one thing and we will lose other thing. The best way is to find a balance between the two. When you are a perfectionist, you will more than often will get what you want - Perfection. You will get 100% in all your exams, or you can finish all works assigned without fail. This may lead to promotion, better life etc.

But what can you possibly lose? What will you have to sacrifice?

I’m afraid one obvious answer is that you will suffer more stress in your whole life. That’s sort of the price you will have to pay to consistently be the best in what you do.

Wouldn’t it be better to achieve 90% without any stress at all? Or finish 90% of the works assigned with some extra time to play with your children? or a husband who can’t cook but never fail to eat at home every night.

Perfection is really all about achieving 100%. And there’s only one number to get which is 100. However if you aim to achieve over 90% (not perfect), you have a wider number to aim for. 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97,98, 99, 100. Don’t you agree it will be 10 times less stressful than aiming for 100%?

Disclaimer - Aiming for 10% is also not perfect, but what’s the point of aiming if you are aiming for lower goals. I personally think that 90% is the best way to go.

- I wonder -
Is there any perfectionist in the house?

——- Personal Note ——–
I’m not sure about you. But most of the time, when I am not aiming for 100%, I usually will do better than when I aim for perfection. My studies for example, the more stress I am, the more difficult it usually be for me to study. Do you have the same experience?
