If you have been following my personal rant, you will know that I occasionally write a piece or two on the latest development of wimax in Malaysia. Just a personal rant from the blogger in me who yearn for faster internet connection.

And if you read all the rants from other people on the net about P1 Wimax, it is always about why their areas are not yet covered. They are all getting fed up with their current ISP and if their areas are covered, they will definitely make that switch.

Good news! you can now nominate your area to be the next place to be covered. This may be just a gimmick, or it may be the real thing. Still, would you pass such opportunity to influence the wimax coverage in your area?

All you need to do is to just visit this P1W1max site and nominate your area. From the way I see it, if you manage to convince all your hometown folk to vote, the chances will be higher and you may get that wimax coverage slightly faster.

There’s no harm in trying right?

I just came back from the PC Fair in KLCC. As usual everything is just as crowded as ever. Come to think of it, PC Fair doesn’t change that much. You will be seeing the same companies promoting their product, maybe some gimmick here and there, but people still go there religiously (Myself included).

I guess the main attraction of a PC Fair is basically the freebies and the ease to compare between products. For example, if you want to purchase a laptop, just approach any laptop booth and you will have sales person running to you explaining why you should buy theirs.

Speaking of freebies, P1W1max is also there. And there are having one of the most interesting freebies in the PC Fair.

You know that box where a person will go in and there will be money flying around inside. The person must grab as much cash as possible within a specific time and what ever amount he manage to grab will be his for the taking. P1W1max booth is offering exactly that.

If you subscribe with Wimax at the booth, you will be given a chance to go into the Money Chamber and grab as much cash as you can. However you are only given 10 seconds to do so.

Anyone planning to subscribe, postpone that thought and go to PC Fair in KLCC now. You might end up with a few extra cash in hand.

Venue – KL Convention Center, PC Fair Hall 5, Booth 530
Date – 12 – 14th December 2008
Time – 11 am – 9 pm

p.s. Snap some pictures if you can ya.

I was reading through my favorite forum (Malaysian) – Lowyat.net when I found a thread about a new P1W1Max promotion exclusive for the forumner.

Basically, any Lowyat.net forumner that live in Klang Valley and in a wimax coverage area can apply to be included in the program. You will be able to use Wimax for 6 month (until 15th June 09) absolutely free of charge. Yes, my dear friend.. Free wimax with no string attached.

You can choose to continue your subscription after the 6 months is over or you can stop immediately. They will not charge you anything but you will have to return the modem they gave you.

So what’s the catch?

Once a month, they will organize a get together to gather feedback on how to further improve their service. That’s it.

If you are living in areas within wimax coverage (specifically at Klang Valley), you should really apply. If you didn’t like it, you can return the modem. I really don’t see any reason not to try this offer out.

Oh ya, you will need to hasten though, as only the first 50 subscribers will be given the chance. Just send a private message to the thread starter or email him at lowyat_p1w1max at packet-1.com. The offer will also be closed by 14th of December 2008.

Source – Lowyat.net

p.s. Personally, I’m quite amazed by the effort made by P1 staff to further improve their service. Anyone can sell a product, but to continually improve the product for better customer experience is very admirable.

I am compelled to write a post about P1W1MAX’s fair usage policy because I was just made aware that such policy exist. Since I have been writing about the benefit of wimax, you might want to know about this policy first before you subscribe.

Basically, it is a policy that ensure every subscriber the best speed available. Whether you use a few hours a day or 24 hours a day, you will receive the best speed at anytime. In order to maintain that, P1W1MAX apparently is monitoring all bandwidth usage and once you used up all the 20GB bandwidth limits, your internet usage will be prioritize less. In other words, you will experience slower speed than the rest of the subscribers (You can still go online though)

The Cons

Some of us do use the internet to download and upload large files. This can become a nuisance.

The Pros

Everyone will receive their fair share of maximum speed. Personally, I think it is fair. We are paying customer too right?

From my research, 20GB is the highest ceiling limit compared to other wireless competitors

20GB per month is roughly about 667MB per day, An average person who plays games, surfs and downloads will rarely exceed this.

If 20GB limit is hit, you can still go online. It’s just that priority will be given to those who hasn’t reached their 20GB

I hope if P1W1MAX is reading this, at least they can

Provide us with a mean to monitor the bandwidth usage.

Maybe send us an email about a week before we used up our 20GB limits

Provide an option to increase the limits by paying slightly and reasonably more.

There.. now you know.

For readers who were actually following my quest for Wimax, it is with great pleasure for me to announce that Alor Setar in Kedah is now covered by wimax. This is good news for me because I am a Kedahan. The bad news is that I am currently not working in Kedah. Well, at least, whenever I go back home to Kedah, I know for certain that it is now covered.

For the benefit of everyone reading (who is interested), I’m going to update the wimax coverage here in this post. Since I always visited the site checking for new coverage, I might as well put up a post to update it here. (Last Updated on 12/12/08)

A friend of mine just forwarded me this youtube clip of Wimax. It was supposed to be aired on TV for Aidilfitri, but I don’t think it was aired. Since it is still Aidilfitri mood here in Malaysia, do enjoy the clip.

Spoiler (Only read this when you finished watching and do not get the message)

It is a story of a guy who left his hometown to go work in the city. He kept in touch with his folks via video calls etc. However due to the unstable internet connection, he missed the last message from his mother. He was supposed to return to “Muar” (His other hometown) this year. After all the macho pose, he was informed by the neighbour next door that he had returned to the wrong hometown. Funny..

Today I wrote two entries – 3 Tips To Stop Work From Following You Home and this personal rant.

Good news to everyone in Penang, Malaysia. It turns out Penang is the next area in Malaysia to be covered by wimax. Apparently P1W1max is given the green light to building the infrastructure, including base stations to provide the wimax services.

I am no where near Penang, but from the way I see it, it shows that nationwide coverage may not just be an empty promise.

You do remember the promise right? 25% of Malaysia covered by year end.

Quoting – “P1 commercially launched its WiMAX services in mid-August, the first operator to do so in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region. The company has said it plans to extend coverage to major cities in Johor, Penang, Kedah, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca by year-end, in line with its mandate to cover 25% of the peninsula’s population. Its services are currently available in selected areas in the Klang Valley.”

Can’t wait

I wrote two entries today – Improve Studying With The Theory of Three and this personal rant.

This is just a followup of my research on P1W1max. Unfortunately my area is not yet covered by wimax, so I will present it here based on what I read in LYN Forum etc.

Speed

Generally most of the subscriber are getting what they pay for. An example is like the above screenshot. The download speed is at 1370 kbps and the upload speed is at 709 kbps. This is from one who subscribes to 1200kbps package. In fact the subscribers are actually getting more than what they pay for.

I’m sure the figure will be affected once there are too many subscribers in the area. However, it is said that once the base station had received 80% load, they will setup a new base station. If that promise is kept, nobody will suffer a slow connection again.

Limitation

A lot of users are expressing concern about their setting the limit of bandwidth to 20GB per month. Even though this is extremely sufficient for normal internet users, heavy downloaders will be affected. But on the positive side, users will be assured of maximum speed since the ISP will be able to predict the bandwidth usage and upgrade accordingly.

Application

Online streaming tested ok

Online gaming tested ok

P2P using utorrent tested ok

Customer Service

Excellent. The customer service technician are well verse with the issues arised, and they are attending to the problem relatively fast. They even send SMS to inform of any upgrade being done.

Conclusion – A service we received will always be as good as the money we pay. But from what I read in the forum, there are a lot of positive review of this wimax. Now, if only they can expedite their nationwide coverage…

I wrote two entries today The Secret to Infinite Energy In Life and this personal rant. Maybe you can read the first entry first for more energy for this one.

This is another entry to complement my quest for a better internet connection. For those readers from Malaysia, I just heard that P1 has officially launched their Wimax services. Now everyone can subscribe to them (provided you are in their coverage area of course) and experience first hand the speed of a wimax connection. These are some of the points I can summarize from their website.

Bad News

Currently the coverage is only to KL and Selangor. I hope they will fulfill their promise to cover the whole west side of Malaysia by year end.

The modem itself is RM999. That is rather expensive for the average person like me.

Good News

You will get the modem FREE if you subscribe to it within the launch promotion (20/8/08 to 30/09/08). If you ever want to subscribe, this will be the best time.

The monthly charges is relatively cheap. They are as low as RM 49 per month for a 400kbps. I’m currently using GPRS connection, paying RM90 for a 40Kbps. You can see right why I’m posting this.

They are other promotional discounts for 1.2Mbps and 2.4Mbps subscribers.

15 Days Service Satisfaction Guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the service, you can opt to unsubscribe.

I just noticed that they have a nationwide option in the package. I think this just prove that nationwide coverage is just around the corner. Please God make the corner nearer.

For those who are in the coverage areas, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t try wimax. It is relatively cheap, faster, wireless, comes with a guarantee, and above all, the modem is now FREE

I envy you

More information on the package at P1.com.my

Update – I found this advertisement posted on Youtube. I think this is a not yet aired advertisement of the service. If only everything is wireless

I wrote two articles today, 5 Personal Tips To Improve Shopping List and this personal rant.

For the past few weeks, I have been posting my personal rant on the nature of my slow internet speed and along the way, I was introduced to Wimax as an alternative to the current ISP.

A dear friend of mine had emailed me enquiring more about wimax. In fact the actual question he asked me is what is this wimax I’m talking about.

I realized then that I have never actually introduce and explain what is wimax. No worry, this will be a short post dedicated especially for my friend who may still be confused as to what is this wimax about..

Have you ever been to Starbuck and you see some people actually surf the internet using their laptop? They actually are connected to the internet connection provided by Starbuck. A proper name for it is wifi.

What’s the difference between wifi and your current modem connection?

Wifi is wireless. There’s no need for any phone line to connect to internet. Basically you can surf the net walking if you want to.

Wifi is operating at a much higher speed (11 – 54Mb/s) than wired broadband.

Now, why am I descibing wifi when I’m supposed to be describing wimax?

The reason is because wimax is generally similar to wifi. It has about the same super speed BUT the range can be up to 50km instead of wifi’s 0.1km. You can basically go to any town within Malaysia and still get connected to the net at very fast speed (theoretically speaking).

And that’s not the best part. According to this website, the monthly subscription cost for wimax is expected to be below RM100 (USD30).

Another good news from the website is that by 2012, 65% of Malaysia will be covered by Wimax. I bet we are going to see a lot of new bloggers then

p.s. The explanation is intentionally written generally to allow better understanding of what Wimax is. More information on the company providing the service, Packet One at their website – P1W1Max.com
