Glass of Water

Summary – The Glass of Water Theory

In a lecture on stress management, the lecturer picked up a glass of water and asked his student “How much this water weigh?”. One student estimated the weight to be about 500g.

The lecturer then asked “Do you think you can hold the glass of water with your hand stretched?”. The students replied “Easily.”With a smile, the lecturer continues “The truth is, it is really easy to hold that glass of water. But what will happen if you hold that glass for an hour? Your hand will start to feel pain. What will happen after a day of holding the glass of water? you may pass out from the pain.”

“The same goes to stress. Most people can handle their own stress. When you work, you are given a lot of work to do, problem to solve, and other stress. Being your job, you will always be able to handle it.”

“But what will happen if you keep carrying that stress on your shoulder even after work? What will happen if you keep bringing your work and problem home? and what will happen if you sleep every night thinking about your unfinished work?”

“You will collapse eventually”

“So always leave your burden and stress periodically. Leave your work at your workplace. Don’t bring it home. Pick it up tomorrow when you’re there and you can do something about it. You can’t do much about it at home. So why bother. Your stress and burden will then be more bearable and easier to manage.”

So guys.. Enjoy your Sunday 🙂

Summary – Everything is important.. The question is to whom?

I apologize for the long disappearance. As you may have known, I’m actually going to be a father any day now :). So, there a lot of things to do and to prepare. Again please accept my apology.

The other day, during the routine checkup, my wife was sent to the hospital due to some suspected problem. Believe it or not, we were there from 4pm to 11pm just to find out that everything is ok.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind waiting as long as the baby is fine. And I totally understand that my wife’s case can be considered as having the least priority since she’s just there for a further examination. It may be considered not important for the doctors, but to me, she is the most important. And that is why I don’t mind waiting that 7 hours.

Through out our life, we will face a lot of similar cases. Hundreds of things to do in so little hour. And there’s no other way to do this but to prioritize and do those that are more important first. We just can’t do everything in the same time. But still, that least important thing, may be the most important thing to somebody else.

  • A short nap to someone who has been working 48 hours straight. Other people may see taking a short nap is not important, but to that person, he may get very upset if he just can’t get that sleep
  • Spending time together with your husband. For the husband he may feel that it is not necessary since they are living in the same house. She can meet him anytime. So he brings back work from the office. However, for the wife, the most important thing is she need that after-work time to maybe watch a movie together etc. This is what important to her.

Conclusion – What seems to be not important to us, may very well be the only thing that is important to someone else. We just need to consider that.

– I wonder –
Any other scenario that shows exactly this?
